chess endings someone told me that once you get your opponent down to just his king you only have 13 moves to get him in a checkmate before it is a stalemate. is this an official rule or just someones house rule?

i believe the actual rule is 50 moves without moving a pawn or capturing and it is stalemate.

There is no... ...limit to the # of moves you have to mate a bare King. The 50 move rule can only be invoked if it can be proven that 50 consecutive move pairs,(by both sides),have been made with no pawns being moved,or any captures made during that span.
