Message: Define long. Do you mean in terms of actual time or moves? There is a big difference.

Message: From wikipedia,
"The longest tournament chess game ever to be played under modern time rules was Nikolić-Arsović, Belgrade 1989, which lasted for 20 hours and 15 minutes, ending in a 269-move draw.[1][2] At the time this game was played, FIDE had modified the fifty move rule to allow 100 moves to be played without a piece being captured in a rook and bishop versus rook endgame, the situation in Nikolić - Arsović. FIDE has since rescinded that modification to the rule.
The longest decisive tournament game is Fressinet-Kosteniuk, Villandry 2007, which Kosteniuk won in 237 moves.[2] The last 116 moves were a rook and bishop versus rook ending, as in Nikolić - Arsović. Fressinet could have claimed a draw under the fifty-move rule, but didn't do so since neither player was keeping score, it being a rapid chess game. Earlier in the tournament, Korchnoi had successfully invoked the rule to claim a draw against Fressinet; the arbiters overruled Fressinet's argument that Korchnoi couldn't do so without keeping score. Fressinet, apparently wanting to be consistent, didn't try to claim a draw against Kosteniuk in the same situation.[3]" ——— Chess: Battleground London — World chess champion Anand faces his nearest rival Carlsen at the London Chess Classic. The second edition of the London Chess Classic takes place at Kensington Olympia from tomorrow until 15 December. This year will be even stronger than last with the participation of the world chess champion, Viswanathan Anand from India. Anand was a frequent and popular visitor to England in his early career, but hasn't played a chess tournament here since 1995 and interest will be high, not least because he will be facing the player tipped to succeed him, the Norwegian chess prodigy Magnus Carlsen. Their meetings take on added significance with Carlsen's controversial withdrawal from ...

www.xs4all.nl ——— For 2nd Year, Younger Women Beat Older Men at Czech Event — In chess, men almost always outperform women, and younger chess players often beat older ones. But which group — women or older players — has the advantage when they face each other? The annual Czech Coal Chess Match provides a clue. For now, the answer seems to be women. In last year’s tournament, the women, all of them young, and whom the organizers called the Snowdrops, edged the Old Hands team of men, 16.5 to 15.5. This year, the women won even more decisively, 18 to 14, despite losing the last round, 3 to 1. The women were led both years by Humpy Koneru of India, who is No. 2 on the list of top women chess players. She was the tournament’s top scorer this year, with ...

Message: I am talking about move wise? ——— Vishy Anand and Magnus Carlsen lead the field for London Classic — Last year's London Classic at Olympia attracted large audiences, so its 2010 version on 8-15 December, with the reigning world chess champion Vishy Anand now in the field, will be of great interest. Its added spice is the rivalry at the top of the world chess rankings between Anand, Norway's 20-year-old Magnus Carlsen, and Russia's ex-champion and current world No4, Vlad Kramnik. The global chess body, Fide, still hopes to persuade Carlsen to rescind his withdrawal from the May 2011 candidates matches and has announced a new date of 22 December for contract signing. How he performs in London, just a week before the contract deadline, may affect the talks and whether he can take ...

Message: Does anybody think, if you brake that 269 move record as the world longest game would that count for something, if you broke the record on this site? ——— The Man With Too Much Chess Talent — Dragoljub Velimirovic used to be one of the world's most feared attackers, always looking for the impossible. His imaginative play was compared to the colorful world chess champion Mikhail Tal's razzle-dazzle. His playing style was unique, daring and often falling off the edge. He made risky moves and so many of them that you wondered how much punishment his chess pieces could take. He loved to create confusion on the chessboard, always believing he could find a beautiful escape from a bad situation. He had enough talent to pull it off, perhaps "too much talent" as Bobby Fischer once put it when we discussed the play of the Serbian grandmaster and champion. At 68, Velimirovic doesn't seem to ...

No, I doubt it very much. Especially if you are thinking that your game with tk29560 will go that long. On move 71, it was a mate in 11, even though you guys on currently on move 152.
It's half-interesting, but it's too easy to just drag games out here for it to have some real official meaning in the overall stats book. ——— Chess: A sacrificial rook — Sacrificing a chess piece is a nerve-racking business, but think of the warm glow when it pays off. RB If chess pieces could talk, they would be screaming at me something like: "Can't you take a hint, dummy? We're all pointing in one direction – at c3!" And I would say back to them: "Yes, thank you, I see that, but I have to tell you that I am always nervous of sacrificing a chess piece when I can't calculate a forced mate or win of material." But let's try to get the nerves under control and venture the less valuable piece first: 1...Bxc3. What's to stop White playing 2 bxc3, and if 2...Qxc3 3 Bb3, with threats against f7? That doesn't seem to help Black much, so what about the rook: ...

Message: That must be deliberate. I'm surprised the 50 move rule has not been triggered yet. They must be trying to take advantage of each position to maximize the potential number of moves within the 50 move rule.
The game is so long that my computer slows down trying to run the script for the it. I even get a warning from Windows saying that if the script continues the computer may become unresponsive. I kept running it anyway, but didn't have the problem for too long. I just needed to wait a couple minutes.
That game appears to be on-going, but I don't see how it can continue for much longer.

It's on move 2167 right now. But again, completely ridiculous game. I know there was mate earlier, but going from memory, the position at move 71 was close to:
The game did not need nearly 2000 more moves, so that really takes away from it feeling like the legit winner of longest game.
I hope I'm not coming across as too arrogant. I know that some people can't mate with a rook and king vs a king. But at some point, you could just ask someone or look it up. It's one of the easier skills to learn.

Message: 50 move draw rule doesn't occur automatically. They would have to request draw manually, or ask Mike to declare it a draw.

Message: Well, the 3rd repeat position draw rule does occur automatically.
Occasions where the 50 move rule might apply do not happen very often. Yet, it should be a simple fix. Such a fix might prevent absurd games lasting thousands of moves!

Message: Threefold repetition rule is triggered automatically in GK, however the game will not end automatically, but the next person to move is given an option to claim the game a draw. Much like in normal OTB chess, the process is not automatic.

MaCa.

Message: A game I played with conditional moves ended automatically with the threefold repetition rule. Maybe it had something to do with the conditional moves. Conditional moves are active when you have a vacation flag. If the threefold repetition occurs while I am on vacation, then I won't be around to take the option. Perhaps that is why it was automatic. (But I could have taken the option when I got back, or perhaps my opponent took the option). I expected it to happen automatically and from my perspective it did.

Message: without analysis, i believe it to be mate in 3 from move 71...
71... Re4 (or anywhere past the king on the 4th row)
72. Kh2 Re1 (or whatever row you're on, move to the 1st, eg Ra1, or Rb1)
73. Kh3 Rh1#
it's entirely possible that both players believe it to be drawn, and have decided to continue playing the game until one of them dies. i can remember when i first started playing chess, i thought R vs K was a draw. the first key to breaking this silly belief is knowing what the mate looks like, then forcing your opponent into the position is child's play.
